Chemical Properties
Polyacrylamide is relatively stable to heat. Its solid state softens only at 220-230°C, and its aqueous solution does not significantly degrade until temperatures above 110°C.
Physical Properties
Solubility in Water: It readily dissolves in clean water under rapid mechanical stirring, forming a transparent, viscous solution. Degradation occurs at temperatures above 40°C.
Stability: It exhibits moderate hygroscopicity and can be stored for long periods in a ventilated, dry place.
Viscosity: The viscosity of a polyacrylamide solution is linearly related to its molecular weight.
Products Application
Polyacrylamide is the most widely used and most efficient polymer organic synthetic water treatment agent in the world. Some uses of polyacrylamide in water treatment:
1. Application of polyacrylamide in water treatment
The purpose of water treatment is to remove impurities in water by taking appropriate treatment and purification methods to meet the standards for domestic or industrial water. The application of polyacrylamide in water treatment mainly includes two aspects: the treatment of low turbidity water and high turbidity water.
Research experiments show that when aluminum sulfate is used to treat low turbidity water, if polyacrylamide is added at the same time, the water treatment capacity can be improved, and the turbidity of the treated water will be reduced. During the study, it was found that adding polyaluminum chloride and polyacrylamide at the same time when treating low turbidity water can significantly improve the deturbidity effect. Studies have shown that when treating high turbidity water in the Yellow River, adding polyaluminum chloride and polyacrylamide together can save costs and improve the effluent water quality.
2. Application of polyacrylamide in domestic sewage treatment
The main pollutants of urban domestic sewage are organic matter, which is eutrophic, and there are also pathogens and inorganic salts. Its characteristics are high chemical oxygen demand COD, turbidity, total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN), and the water body is darker in color and has a bad smell. For water bodies with complex components, single-component flocculants often fail to meet the requirements of water treatment, so composite flocculants have become the focus of research. Composite flocculants not only retain their respective advantages, but also make up for the shortcomings when used alone, and play a synergistic flocculation role. There are three types of composite flocculants: organic, inorganic, and organic-inorganic composite flocculants. The most commonly used are organic-inorganic composite flocculants. First, inorganic flocculants are added to the sewage for preliminary treatment, and then organic polymer flocculants such as polyacrylamide are added to further play a flocculation role through its adsorption and bridging effect.
Studies have shown that when flocculating urban domestic sewage, the use of liquid polyaluminum ferric chloride and polyacrylamide as coagulants and filter aids can improve the total phosphorus removal rate. Polyaluminum ferric chloride is also used as a coagulant, and the coagulant polyacrylamide is used together with the coagulant to treat the simulated urban polluted river water by pneumatic flocculation, achieving good treatment results. Of course, polyacrylamide can also be modified to obtain modified derivatives for the treatment of domestic sewage alone.
