PAM Flocculant (Polyacrylamide) Product Specification and Application

Product Description of PAM Flocculant

PAM flocculant, short for Polyacrylamide flocculant, is a water-soluble macromolecular polymer with the CAS number 9003-05-8 and molecular formula (C₃H₅NO)ₙ. It is synthesized through the free radical polymerization of acrylamide monomers, presenting as white or pale yellow granular or powdery solids. Characterized by non-toxicity, odorlessness, and excellent solubility in water, PAM flocculant possesses strong adsorption and bridging capabilities, which enable it to aggregate small suspended particles in liquids into large flocs, thereby achieving efficient solid-liquid separation.

According to the charge property of its molecular chain, PAM flocculant is mainly divided into three categories: Anionic PAM Flocculant (APAM), Cationic PAM Flocculant (CPAM), and Nonionic PAM Flocculant (NPAM). Each type has unique flocculation performance and is tailored to different water quality and industrial scenarios, making it a crucial functional flocculant in water treatment, mining, and other fields.

Technical Indicators of PAM Flocculant

The technical indicators of PAM flocculant are the core basis for measuring its flocculation efficiency and application scope, directly determining its adaptability to different working conditions. The following are the standard technical parameters of the three main types of PAM flocculant:

Technical Indicator Anionic PAM Flocculant Cationic PAM Flocculant Nonionic PAM Flocculant
Appearance White granular or powdery
Solid Content (%) ≥ 90
Molecular Weight (Million) 6-25 3-12 3-12
Hydrolysis Degree (%) 10-35 N/A 0-5
Cationic Degree (%) N/A 5-80 N/A
Dissolving Time (Minutes) ≤ 90

Note: We provide customized PAM flocculant products according to customers' actual application requirements, such as special molecular weight, charge density, and temperature resistance. The specific technical indicators and product parameters can be adjusted based on on-site working conditions.

Application Fields of PAM Flocculant

PAM flocculant is widely used in various industries due to its superior flocculation, sedimentation, and thickening properties. It can significantly improve the efficiency of solid-liquid separation, reduce production costs, and achieve environmental protection and energy conservation. Its main application fields are as follows:

  • Water Treatment Industry

The application of PAM flocculants in the water treatment industry encompasses municipal sewage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, and drinking water purification. In municipal sewage treatment, PAM flocculants are primarily utilized for flocculation-sedimentation and sludge dewatering; they effectively remove suspended solids, COD, and BOD from sewage, thereby reducing the complexity of subsequent treatment processes. Regarding industrial wastewater-such as that from the steel, electroplating, textile dyeing and printing, and chemical industries-APAM flocculants are suitable for treating high-turbidity wastewater with a neutral to alkaline pH, whereas CPAM flocculants demonstrate superior efficacy in sludge dewatering and in treating wastewater containing organic colloids. Furthermore, owing to their excellent flocculation performance in acidic environments, NPAM flocculants are frequently employed in drinking water purification and the treatment of specialized industrial wastewater.

  • Mining and Mineral Processing Industry

In the mining and mineral processing process, PAM flocculant plays a key role in the sedimentation and separation of ore pulp. It can accelerate the settling speed of mineral particles, improve the recovery rate of useful minerals, and reduce the loss of tailings. For example, in coal washing, APAM flocculant can quickly aggregate coal slime particles, making it easy to separate coal and slime, improving the quality of clean coal. In the beneficiation of non-ferrous metals (such as copper, iron, and aluminum), PAM flocculant helps to clarify the ore pulp and improve the efficiency of beneficiation equipment, reducing water consumption and production costs.

  • Oilfield Development

During the oilfield development process, PAM flocculants are widely utilized in drilling, completion, and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) operations. As a drilling fluid additive, PAM enhances the viscosity and shear strength of the drilling fluid, effectively preventing wellbore collapse and fluid loss while simultaneously providing protection for the oil reservoir. In the context of EOR, high-molecular-weight APAM flocculants are injected into the reservoir with the aim of increasing the viscosity of the displacing fluid and expanding the fluid sweep efficiency, thereby boosting crude oil recovery rates. Furthermore, PAM flocculants can serve as clay swelling inhibitors, preventing clay particles within the reservoir from swelling and clogging the formation.

  • Paper Industry

In the paper industry, PAM flocculants are utilized as retention aids, drainage aids, and dry strength agents. They effectively adsorb fibers and filler particles present in the pulp, thereby minimizing the loss of fibers and fillers into the white water, enhancing the retention rate of raw materials, and reducing white water pollution. Furthermore, PAM flocculants accelerate the dewatering rate of the pulp on the paper machine, boosting production efficiency, while also enhancing the dry strength and tensile strength of the finished paper, resulting in a more uniform and smooth paper product.

Packaging, Storage, and Precautions for Use

  • Packaging

PAM flocculant is packaged in kraft paper bags lined with plastic bags, with a net weight of 25 kg per bag. We also offer customized packaging services based on client requirements-such as 15 kg small bags or 750 kg bulk bags-to meet diverse purchasing needs.

  • Storage

PAM flocculant should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated warehouse, protected from moisture, rain, and direct sunlight. It should be kept away from oxidizing agents and other chemicals to prevent chemical reactions that could compromise product performance. The shelf life for powdered PAM flocculant is 24 months, while that for emulsion-form PAM flocculant is 6 to 12 months. If the product becomes damp or forms lumps, it should be dried and crushed before use; however, if the product has severely deteriorated, it should not be used.

  • Precautions for Use

1. PAM flocculant should be dissolved in clean water (preferably tap water) to prepare a solution with a concentration of 0.1% to 0.3%. The stirring speed should be controlled between 100 and 300 rpm to prevent molecular chain breakage caused by excessive agitation, which would negatively impact the flocculation effect.

2. Sufficient dissolution time is required-typically 30 to 90 minutes-until the solution becomes completely clear and transparent, with no undissolved particles remaining.

3. The dosage of PAM flocculant should be determined based on actual water quality conditions and on-site operating parameters; it is recommended to conduct small-scale laboratory tests first to determine the optimal dosage.

4. During application, the prepared PAM flocculant solution should be added uniformly to the water being treated and thoroughly mixed to ensure complete contact between the solution and the water.
