Charge Neutralization: The First Step
Raw water appears cloudy because negatively charged particles repel each other, making it difficult to settle. Cationic polymers are used in water treatment. Your first task is to eliminate this charge barrier. Cationic polymer molecules adsorb onto the particle surface, and their positive charge cancels out the negative charge that separates the particles.
Once the surface charge is neutralized, the particles no longer repel each other. They can now get close enough for physical forces to work.
Particle Bridging and Flocculation
This is the bridging part. Cationic polymers are used in water treatment. A single polymer chain is long enough to attach to multiple particles simultaneously. Imagine a rope with sticky "hands" growing at intervals-one hand grabbing a clay particle, another a bacterial cell, and yet another an organic colloid. Polymers act like bridges, connecting them to form larger, heavier aggregates.
These aggregates are flocs. Cationic polymers are used for water treatment. Good flocs settle quickly in clarifiers or readily release water in dewatering units because the bridging structures create voids that allow water to drain.
